    Santa's diary:

Santa is doing something different at every hour of the day. Right now he could be having breakfast on the porch, checking on the elves at the Toy Factory, feeding the reindeer or reading letters at the mailbox. The live map tells you which one, in a line called "Happening right now".

Here is Santa's day. At six in the morning he has porridge on the porch. At eight he does his rounds between his house and the Toy Factory, checking on the elves. At twelve he feeds the reindeer at the paddock gate, and at one he practises his sleigh round the track by the frozen lake.

In the afternoon he reads the day's letters at the mailbox in the centre square, at five o'clock. At seven he warms up by the fire pit. At ten o'clock everyone in the village goes to bed. The times are North Pole time, which is the same as UTC, but the map shows the next thing in your own time.

Use the map to look around the village. You can tap things. Santa waves, a reindeer trots over, the factory doors open and the snowman lifts his hat. Each thing has a name, and some of them make a little sound.

Santa's work follows the year. From 1 September to 25 December he is busy getting ready for Christmas. From 26 December to 1 January the village has New Year fireworks. The rest of the year he is on his summer break, so the village is quieter.

If you want to know what Santa is doing at a particular time, first look at the timetable above and then at the clock on your own device. Remember that the village runs on North Pole time, the same as UTC, so the times in the timetable are always the same for everyone. The map does the sums for you and shows the times in your own time zone, so a child in any country can follow along. Santa does not mind when you visit. The village is always there, waiting for you to look.

How do the elves know how many toys to make?

We worked it out. There are about 8.1 billion people on Earth, and about a quarter are children under 15: roughly 2 billion. About 38 in every 100 of those children live in homes that celebrate Christmas, which makes around 760 million. Santa rounds it down to 750 million toys, made between 1 September and Christmas Eve, slowly at first and at full speed from late November. Everyone sees the same number on the counter at the same moment.
