    Santa's diary:

In the story, yes, Rudolph is real. He is one of Santa's nine reindeer, and he lives in the stable and paddock at the North Pole. His nose glows, which helps him find his way on the darkest nights. You can see him on our live map, with his eight friends.

The nine reindeer are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph. Each one has a name and a place in the village. Rudolph's glow is what makes him stand out, and on the map he is easy to find.

Santa feeds the reindeer at the paddock gate at twelve o'clock each day. At one o'clock, Santa practises his sleigh round the track by the frozen lake. You can tap a reindeer on the map to see it trot over and say hello.

Some people ask whether Rudolph is a real reindeer, the kind you might see in a field. Rudolph lives in our magical village, where the story is the adventure. This site is a story-world, and the map is a place to play and wonder, not a science lesson.

Rudolph and the others are busiest from 1 September to 25 December, when Santa is getting ready for Christmas. On Christmas Eve, the reindeer help fly Santa's sleigh over towns at midnight where you live. For parents: this is a story-world for families, and it collects no data.

Some children like to know how Rudolph's nose can glow. In the story, it is a special kind of magic that belongs to Santa's village. You do not need to know how it works to enjoy him. Many families like to draw Rudolph, read a book about him or sing a song about him at bedtime. Ask your child what they think his nose looks like when it glows, and let their imagination lead the way.
